SA: Bacteria closes heart surgery unit
ADELAIDE, April 2 AAP - Heart surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital has been cancelledfollowing an outbreak of an antibiotic resistant bacteria.
The Department of Human Services said the multi-resistant staphlyococcus aureus (MRSA)contamination would close the cardiac surgery unit for the remainder of this week.
Elective operations on 12 patients, scheduled between today and Friday, had been cancelled.
However, emergency surgery would be maintained.
The department said MRSA was present in all hospitals and current infection controlmeasures were designed to minimise its spread.
"However, the increase in the number of cases in the cardiac surgery unit has led toa decision by the hospital to close the unit and to carry our environmental testing ofthe operating theatres and to undertake a thorough clean," the department said.
The results of the environmental survey were expected to be available on Thursday orFriday this week.
Subject to those results being satisfactory, the hospital planned to reopen the cardiacunit on Saturday, April 6.
