NSW: Govt unable to manage money after $40m payroll bungle

The New South Wales opposition says a payroll bungle that saw around $40 million incorrectlypaid to state education employees shows the government's inability to manage money.

The Sun-Herald newspaper reports most of the money will be repaid under an agreementbrokered with unions but $4.4 million remains unrecovered from last financial year.

The paper says some overpayments in excess of $50,000 are being paid back over 20 years.

But opposition leader JOHN BROGDEN says a 20-year timeline to pay funds back is unacceptable.

He says the bungle shows gross mismanagement by the government when tens of millionsof dollars of taxpayer funds over five years could have been better spent employing newteachers or building new schools.

A spokeswoman for Education Minister JOHN WATKINS says the government is making administrativechanges to fix the mistakes, which accounted for only 0.17 per cent of the $4 billion-pluspayroll.
