Fed: High Court choice criticised for being too male

The appointment of JOHN DYSON HEYDON to the High Court has been criticised as beinga blow to women and for making the nation's top court too Sydney-centric.

Attorney-General DARYL WILLIAMS has appointed New South Wales judge HEYDON to the HighCourt to replace MARY GAUDRON, who will retire in the new year.

The decision means all seven members of the High Court will be male, with four judgesfrom New South Wales.

Labor and former New South Wales Supreme Court Chief Justice LAWRENCE STREET have expresseddisappointment that a woman did not win the job.

Acting Opposition Leader JENNY MACKLIN says Justice HEYDON is highly talented, butshe thinks it's extraordinary that the government has been unable to find a woman to takeJustice GAUDRON'S position.
