NSW: Periodic detention laws still need review, says govt

SYDNEY, Feb 6 AAP - The withdrawal today of Rene Rivkin's appeal to the NSW Parole
Board did not change the need to overhaul the federal periodic detention laws, the NSW
government said today.

NSW Justice Minister John Hatzistergos said the Rivkin case highlighted the need for
a better system.

"The Rivkin case has illustrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that federal periodic detention
laws are a chaotic mess," Mr Hatzistergos said in a statement.
