FED:Aust urges Egypt to set election date
CANBERRA, Feb 14 AAP - Australia is urging Egypt's military leaders to set a timetable
for democratic elections following the collapse of Hosni Mubarak's regime.
Mubarak's 30-year rule ended on Friday when he was driven from power following an 18-day
pro-democracy uprising.
Egypt's new military regime has since issued a proclamation setting a six-month timetable
to prepare democratic elections.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Monday noted the "wonderful and remarkable images"
of celebration on the streets following Mubarak's downfall.
Egyptians needed to be able to continue to enjoy that freedom, she said.
"It's the freedom to vote for a civilian government of their choosing," the prime minister
told Sky News, adding that Australia wanted to see a timetable for elections.
