Vic: Bulldog loses battle with stingray

By Laura Burgoine

MELBOURNE, Feb 22 AAP - Jarrad Grant's AFL debut for the Western Bulldogs has been
put on painful hold after he was stung on the ankle by a stingray.

Grant was in the Bulldogs' squad for tonight's pre-season match against Essendon, but
hobbled home on crutches today after the painful sting at Port Melbourne beach.

The 18-year-old, ironically drafted from the Dandenong Stingrays last year, suffered
a minor puncture wound to his left ankle while in shallow water during a club recovery
training session early this morning.

FED:Howes takes aim at Reserve and Treasury=3

Independent senator Nick Xenophon said the undervalued Yuan enabled Chinese manufacturers
to dump cheap product in Australia at the expense of local suppliers.

He called on BHP-Billiton, which announced a record $23 billion profit on Wednesday,
to ensure it was doing the right thing by buying Australian.

The company's response that giving preference to Australian producers would breach
global trade rules was "a bit cheeky".

"The rules of free trade are not so free," Senator Xenophon told reporters in Canberra.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said the government could relieve the pressure on manufacturing
by abandoning its carbon tax and cut spending.

"If you can get government spending down you take the pressure off interest rates,"

he told ABC Television.

"And that should take the pressure of the dollar."

FED:Aust urges Egypt to set election date

CANBERRA, Feb 14 AAP - Australia is urging Egypt's military leaders to set a timetable
for democratic elections following the collapse of Hosni Mubarak's regime.

Mubarak's 30-year rule ended on Friday when he was driven from power following an 18-day
pro-democracy uprising.

Egypt's new military regime has since issued a proclamation setting a six-month timetable
to prepare democratic elections.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Monday noted the "wonderful and remarkable images"

of celebration on the streets following Mubarak's downfall.

Egyptians needed to be able to continue to enjoy that freedom, she said.

"It's the freedom to vote for a civilian government of their choosing," the prime minister
told Sky News, adding that Australia wanted to see a timetable for elections.

Tech puts bullying under spotlight

New Straits Times
07-20-2009
Tech puts bullying under spotlight
Edition: Main/Lifestyle
Section: Tech & U
Column: First byte

BULLYING in school is nothing new. It's a problem that school administrators, parents and relevant bodies have to deal with for years. There's always someone or a group of students who like to inflict hurt on their peers. It can be in the form of physical abuse, rumours, gossips or threats, all of which have a devastating effect on the victim, physically and psychologically.

A decade ago, bullying was confined within the school vicinity and probably only a small group of students and teachers saw it or were aware of it. The humiliation for the victims was already horrible back then.
But in this cyber age, bullying has moved on to a new level. Bullies have extended their act from the school compound to e- mails, Web sites, chatrooms, text messaging and social networks.

With wireless technology, news of the bullying can spread quickly, get put online and seen around the world. Probably no one can agree with this more than the two female students in Terengganu who were allegedly victims of bullying in school. They were about to forget the whole episode and get on with their lives, but the bullying act was caught on camera, uploaded on the Internet and probably watched repeatedly by others.

For the victims, it was an embarrassment and intrusion into their privacy. While the bullies have been dealt with accordingly by the authorities, the victims have to live with the fact that they have become an "overnight sensation" for the wrong reason.

This case brings to light yet again the issue of tech abuse among the younger generation. While it is encouraging to see many making use of the Internet and other digital tools wisely, there are others who do otherwise and in the process affect other people's lives. And while there are laws to deal with cyber bullying and other forms of tech abuse, it is hoped that more efforts will be made to show the younger generation the positive connections and educational benefits of the Internet and its derivatives.

Parents and educators also have to do more to guide and provide the right information to help the young cope with the untamed virtual world.

Fed: Party Princess Paris all dressed down, but no gig to go to

By Melissa Iaria

MELBOURNE, Dec 29 AAP - Party princess Paris Hilton has touched down in Melbourne to
do what she does best - spend.

The petite heiress flew in first class from Los Angeles to a huge media throng and
a handful of adoring male fans.

She burst through the Melbourne Airport arrival doors about 10am (AEDT) wearing a pale
blue tracksuit with its hood pulled over her head, trademark giant sunnies and a red bag
bearing her signature statement, "That's hot".

She was accompanied by her younger sister Nicky, manager Mike Heller and new friend
Brittany Flickinger, who won the MTV reality show Paris Hilton's My New BFF (Best Friend
Forever).

Hilton told reporters she wants to relax, shop and check out the wares of Australian designers.

"We're just here, just shopping and relaxing," Hilton said as she bustled past media.

"We're just here to relax and enjoy Australia."

Celebrity snappers buzzed around her to capture their best shot as one star-struck
fan announced: "You Rock, Paris".

Nathan Lowe, from Melbourne's working-class west, was among the mainly male fans.

He left clutching a freshly signed copy of his 2004 FHM magazine, with Paris on the
cover after waiting two-and-a-half hours for the star.

"What's not to like?" he asked.

The Hiltons were whisked away in a waiting black Lexus while a silver Lexus was used
to carry a huge bevy of luggage.

Hilton will spend the night in Melbourne, but is here without a gig.

Organisers of her trip reportedly (EDS: News Ltd) failed to secure her an endorsement
deal in Melbourne, leaving her plenty of time to check out the city's shopping.

Her spokeswoman confirmed at this stage the star did not have any commitments.

Hilton will have a private dinner in Melbourne tonight and fly to Sydney tomorrow for
a New Year's Eve party at Sydney nightspot Trademark, which will be streamed over the
internet.

NSW: Police trying to find dumpster children

SYDNEY, Aug 20 AAP - Police are trying to find three young children who may have been
sleeping rough in a dumpster in NSW's Hunter Valley.

Two boys aged four and six and a nine-year-old girl were reported to police after they
were found camping out in an industrial bin behind shops on High Street at Maitland.

The dumpster contains a mattress, pillows and colourful bedding as well as a makeshift curtain.

An empty potato chip packet and children's magazines are also inside.

The children were reported to police on Saturday, with one nearby shop worker saying
the children were dirty, badly dressed and one had no shoes.

However, local police are playing down fears the children have been abandoned, despite
them being seen at the bin a number of times over the past few weeks.

They say the children could simply be using the bin as a cubby house.

"There's been a suggestion that they've been in the vicinity, on and off, for a couple
of weeks, but certainly no one's been seen sleeping in the bin or actually living in it,"

Maitland Police Inspector Trevor Shiels told AAP.

"When police investigated they found a few bedding items and living items. It's a bit
hard to draw a conclusion."

There are scant details known about the children, however, the four-year-old boy has
a shaved head and the six-year-old has a mullet hairstyle.

Police have contacted local waste companies to halt collections and have stepped up
patrols in the hope of finding the children.

They have also reported the matter to the Department of Community Services (DOCS).

Qld: Rain not enough to produce run-off, says bureau

BRISBANE, Dec 26 AAP - Rain in Queensland over the last few days has not been enough
to top up dam levels in the drought ravaged south-east corner, the weather bureau said
today.

A rain band swept over central and western parts of the state at the weekend, bringing
falls of up to 35mm in the 48 hours to 9am (AEST) yesterday.

But there has been little in the south-east, said weather bureau senior forecaster Vikash Prasad.

Lass than 10mm fell to 9am (AEST) today and rain in the six hours to 3pm (AEST) today
and been around 20mm.

Mr Prasad said 24mm was recorded to 3pm (AEST) at the Port of Brisbane, 23mm at nearby
Hemmant and 21mm in the northern Brisbane suburb of Toombul.

Falls were lower in catchment areas and Wivenhoe and Somerset dams received only 10mm
and 9mm respectively during the same six hour period.

Dam levels in the south-east corner are now less than 25 per cent.

More than 200mm was needed in catchment areas to produce any runoff, Mr Prasad said.

"The rain we have had today has just been soaked up by the ground," he said.

There was a chance of some showers or storms in south-east Queensland next weekend
but for the next few days, the forecast was fine with drier south-easterly winds.

Fed: Stronger confidence fuels interest rate rise fears

AAP General News (Australia)

Fed: Stronger confidence fuels interest rate rise fears

By Paul Osborne

CANBERRA, April 11 AAP - Home-owners are more likely to face an interest rate hike
this year after two surveys revealed a sharp rise in business confidence on the back of
stronger economic conditions.

The National Australia Bank's monthly business survey for March released today showed
business conditions at a 29-month high after rising 50 per cent to 20 points.

Company concerns about the short-term outlook for the economy faded in the face of
improved domestic trading conditions and profitability.

But cost pressures, high oil prices - which could see petrol reach $1.40 a litre in
some capital cities over the Easter break - and the availability of skilled labour remain
a concern.

NAB head of Australian economics Jeff Oughton said the bank was now forecasting a three
per cent rise in GDP for 2006, revised upward from 2.75 per cent.

Mr Oughton said the stronger economic outlook had lifted the NAB's forecast for underlying
inflation and pointed to the Reserve Bank (RBA) raising interest rates.

"NAB has changed from seeing the RBA being on hold with risks evenly balanced - a view
maintained since April 2005 - to expecting a modest tightening of policy during the next
few months or so, as the upside underlying risks to inflation have increased significantly,"

he said.

He said the RBA would be particularly sensitive to signs of higher wage and price pressures.

Similar sentiments were reflected in the ACIL Tasman-Australian Chamber of Commerce
and Industry's investor confidence survey.

Businesses were optimistic about investment over the next 12 months and believed conditions
were sound.

But sales and profit growth continued to be low.

Most businesses expected a small rise in interest rates this year.

ACCI chief Peter Hendy said the chief constraint on investment reflected in the report
was the non-availability of qualified staff.

"Skill shortages are a number one priority for the business community," he said.

Lending figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today show consumers
are also feeling more confident about the economy.

Personal finance commitments rose 2.1 per cent to $6.5 billion in February, following
a 3.6 per cent increase in January.

Commercial finance lending also increased by four per cent to $33.4 billion.

But CommSec equities economist Andrew Mitchell said there was no need to panic on rates.

"Interest rates are the most stable they have been in 32 years," Mr Mitchell said.

"And although there are whispers that interest rates may increase soon the vast majority
of economists, including us, believe that interest rates are on hold through 2006."

PROJECT EDGE.

ProjectEDGE, an Extranet application for the entire project life-cycle, is based on its president W. Gary Craig's more than 29 years of experience in private real estate development and providing similar services for corporate, institutional, educational and governmental clients for projects including postal processing & distribution centers, university student and residential housing, shopping centers, office buildings, industrial research complexes, hydroelectric & co-generation plants and warehouses.

Originally developed for managing Edgewater development company projects, ProjectEDGE is based on a benchmark portfolio of more than $600 Million of experience in program management, where successful projects resulted from the entire project team being involved and applying a process approach from the beginning of a project through to its completion.

ProjectEDGE is an electronic communication and collaboration facilitation tool where a self-directed team structure, and the principles of Total Quality Management, partnering, value engineering and converqent engineering can be used in a financially oriented, process-driven methodology for managing projects. ProjectEDGE uses a structure such as the one shown here where the database is a focal point through which each team member communicates with the rest of the team from any location, at any time, using LAN, dial-up, Internet or wireless access. The more the team members share, their information, the more the entire team and the project benefit.

The power of ProjectEDGE is available to Internet users using a browser such as Netscape 4.0 or Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher. Desktop users with the Lotus Notes client software (4.6 or later) can also use

Project EDGE on a LAN as well as on carry-around laptops using dial-up or Internet ISP ProjectEDGE: A Collaborative Project Solution for all Owners and Managers

ProjectEDGE, a project management application for the entire project life cycle, provides all owners and their project teams with a fully integrated communication and GroupWare application including workflow process tools. Whether during feasibility, planning, leasing, approvals, programming, design, construction or operations phases, ProjectEDGE provides tools for:

* Benchmark cycle-time reduction

* Budget and personnel savings

* Improved quality and productivity

* Increased communication and collaboration

* Knowledge based Best Practice

* Notice of required actions

* Document management

* Searches by words or phrases

COMPATIBILITY

ProjectEDGE is compatible with Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Outlook and other Windows applications such as CAD and the Corel and Lotus suites.

LAN and INTERNET ACCESSIBILITY

ProjectEDGE uses the Domino server technology to provide LAN, dial-up and Internet access to project data according to the user-defined seurity settings. Each authorized team member can participate in the project collaboration from any location, at any time.

MODULAR DESIGN

ProjectEDGE has modules for each of its functional areas: Design and Construction, Leasing and Facility Management. The modules can be selected as needed for each person or company's needs for Core Team "C", Design and Construction "D/C", Leasing "L", and Facility Management "F" responsibilities.

ACTION ITEMS MODULES (C, D/C, L, F)

Action Items can be viewed by date or by responsible party or company. RFIs, submittals, expiring insurance certificates and follow-up items from meetings, correspondence, warranty, and safety violations are examples of Action Items. E-mail notifications are sent to all involved parties as well as to interested parties.

The Action Item module is the pulse of the project or enterprise where all on-going actions can be reviewed and acted upon. A system of color coded icons are used to quickly show the status of each item.

CONTRACT ADMINISTRATION (D/C, F)

The Contract Administration tools include contracts, requests for change, change orders, back charges, purchase orders or work orders, insurance, bonding, lien waivers, retention release and contract close-out. These tools can be used for professional service agreements, construction contracts as well as standing maintenance contracts. Workflow approval routes can be used for all agreement types. The completed documents can be attached for reference.

Bid proposals and tabulations can be managed using the Contract Administration module. Contractor progress and retention release requisitions can also be processed on-line in a workflow driven process that incorporates a template similar to the AIA G702/703 forms. Accounting interfaces are being developed to transfer contract information from ProjectEDGE to popular accounting applications.

COMMUNICATIONS (C, D/C, L, F)

Incoming and outgoing communications such as letters, memos, faxes, transmittals, notes of telephone conversations, or e-mails can be initiated or captured in the database. Other features include Action Item follow-up, form letter generation, envelope and mailing label printing, as well as addressing of all documents by selecting the information contained in the project phonebook. All communication items can have a "draft" and collaborative draft status to allow necessary editing until the author "locks" the item to prevent any additional change.

Conventional word processing applications can be used to generate the correspondence if the user prefers. However, rather than cutting and pasting, most users generate their correspondence directly in ProjectEDGE.

DISCUSSION (C, D/C, L, F)

The threaded discussion component is an interactive tool for collaboration, value engineering, process improvement and building a knowledge base. Readers can respond to posted topics with their comments and suggestions including any supporting attachments. The author, as Process Owner, determines when the issue can be closed and adds codes to create a decision log.

DRAWINGS (D/C, L, F)

Listings of drawings: current or historical, revised, supplemental sketch, or as-built, as well as consultant reports, ASI's and specifications are kept. Drawings can be attached for distribution and viewing as well as non-destructive markup using a browser. Subscribers will be notified of drawing changes. A current drawing list or the drawing file is just a "click away" for any authorized user.

MEETINGS (C, D/C, L, F)

ProjectEDGE allows users to define multiple meeting tracks such as Core Team, Kickoff, Programming, Weekly Project, Commissioning and Closeout Meetings. The database provides an agenda planning tool, as well as note taker forms for use during the meeting.

Both meeting minutes and reader comments can include attachments. One or more Action Items can be tied to each item of the meeting minutes.

ProjectEDGE provides the tools for a virtual meeting in which the participants meet electronically to discuss the topics. Such a virtual meeting frees all the participants from their schedule constraints or physical location by allowing them to participate when they are available. The agenda, meeting discussions, reader comments, Action Items and any attached information are made available to all users having the appropriate security designation.

PHONEBOOK (C, D/C, L, F)

The phonebook which lists all contact information for companies and persons is used to fill out user information throughout the application by simply selecting the company or person from a pull down list. Correspondence can also be created from within the Phonebook for user convenience.

The Phonebook can be copied from a master database or from other projects when needed. The entries can be coded by user-defined categories for such diverse purposes as contractor bid lists or lead tracking.

PUNCHLIST (D/C, F)

Process templates are provided to speed punchlist data collection. Room location and responsibility sorts assist in disseminating and updating. Late items are reported as Action Items until signed off. Palm Pilot interfaces have been developed for field use in creating, viewing and updating punchlists.

PHOTOS (C, D/C, L, F)

GST Telecom Reports Second Quarter Operating Results; Proceeding With Auction for Assets.

VANCOUVER, Wash., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ --

GST Telecommunications, Inc., an Integrated Communications Provider (ICP) in California and the western United States, today reported revenues of $56.8 million for the quarter ending June 30, 2000, compared to $63.7 million reported for the first quarter of 2000 and $86.9 million in the corresponding quarter last year. Included in these revenues were construction and facility sale revenues of $3.6, $9.0 and $34.5 million for the second and first quarters of 2000 and second quarter of 1999, respectively. Construction revenues can vary significantly from quarter to quarter based on transaction activity.

Telecommunications service revenues decreased two percent to $53.2 million in the second quarter from $54.5 million in the first quarter. This reflects an increase of four percent over the $51.2 million reported in the second quarter of 1999.

Selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses for the three months ending June 30, 2000 were $31.2 million, a decrease of $4.4 million from the $35.6 million reported in the first quarter of 2000. Capital expenditures for the quarter totaled $17.5 million.

The Company reported second quarter adjusted Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA) of $(15.1) million, compared to $(17.0) million reported in the first quarter and $2.4 million in the corresponding quarter in 1999. Net loss per share was $(1.57) for the three months ended June 30, 2000, compared to $(0.70) for the previous quarter and $(1.28) in the second quarter of 1999.

On May 17, 2000, the Company announced that it had filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. In addition, a Letter of Intent was executed with Time Warner Telecom Inc. (Nasdaq: TWTC) for the sale of substantially all the assets of GST for $450 million in cash, and a commitment was secured from Heller Financial, Inc. to provide (Debtor In Possession) DIP financing for up to $50 million (and the potential for up to an additional $75 million) to continue day-to-day operations. Subsequently, the Letter of Intent with Time Warner Telecom Inc. expired and the Company sought and received Bankruptcy Court approval to proceed with an open bidding procedure for the auction of substantially all of its assets.

"GST continues to operate 'business as usual' during the bidding process," stated Tom Malone, acting chief executive officer. "We have been focused primarily on maintaining operational stability and conserving cash. With assistance from our construction partners, we have modified the terms of many of our construction agreements to accelerate cash receipts. These construction agreement revisions, combined with new fiscal conservation measures instituted over the last three months and operational efficiencies gained from continued process improvements, have resulted in a cash position whereby the Company has not yet needed to draw on the DIP financing secured from Heller Financial." As of August 8, 2000, the Company had unrestricted cash and cash equivalents of $27.7 million.

The bidding procedure stipulates that qualified buyers submit bids no later than August 11, with the final auction to be conducted on August 22. On August 25, 2000, the Company will appear before the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware to seek approval of the sale of its assets to the highest and best bidder(s). If some or all of the Company's assets are not sold through the auction process, the Company will explore other options, including reorganization and restructuring.

Recap of Second Quarter Events

-- GST files voluntary Chapter 11 petition and executes Letter of Intent with Time Warner Telecom Inc. on May 17.

-- GST secures a commitment from Heller Financial, Inc. to provide Debtor In Possession (DIP) financing for up to $50 million to continue day-to-day operations.

-- Letter of Intent with Time Warner Telecom Inc. expires; GST receives approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware with jurisdiction over the Company's bankruptcy proceedings to proceed with an open auction for substantially all of its assets.

-- The final date for submitting bids for substantially all of the Company's assets is extended from July 31 to August 11, and the auction date is moved from August 4 to August 22.

-- The Company receives approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the modification of several major construction agreements, obtained with the consent of the applicable carriers, to provide accelerated cash flows from those agreements.

Juniper enables 100G down under.(CONTRACTS)

Juniper Networks announced that its routers are being used by iiNet, a Australian DSL Internet service provider. iiNet migrated its backbone to Juniper Networks T1600 Core Routers at the beginning of this year and started a two-month trial of Juniper's 100GbE interface cards in May -- the first 100GbE deployment in the Asia-Pacific market.

The Australian ISP market is entering a new era with the initial rollout of the government-owned National Broadband Network (NBN), an A$35.7 billion project aimed at making Gigabit per second (Gbps) Internet access, via fiber-to-the-premises connections, available to 93 percent of the population. While, in the long term, this will eliminate the need for broadband ISPs to provide the "last-mile" connection to customers, it places a much greater burden on their backbone networks.

"We're passionate about providing our customers with the very best service and technology," said Greg Bader, chief technology officer at iiNet. "Rather than waiting for the NBN to be rolled out around the country, we're continuously upgrading the iiNet network so our customers can have the very best experience.

Partnering with Juniper Networks gives us confidence in the fact that we're using the most advanced technology as we expand our services around the country."

Sybase Appoints John J. Sims as President of Sybase 365.

Sybase, Inc., an SAP company and provider of enterprise and mobile software, announced that the company has appointed John J. Sims as president of its mobile services business Sybase 365, effective July 1.

"We warmly welcome John to the Sybase family," said John Chen, chairman and CEO of Sybase. "John brings a wealth of experience in the mobile market, and will focus on extending the global leadership of Sybase 365 in messaging and mobile commerce services."

According to a release, from 2001 to 2010, Sims served as CEO of 724 Solutions, Inc., a company that engages in the design, development, marketing and support of mobile internet/mobile broadband products for use by mobile network operators worldwide. He was also co-founder, CEO and President of TANTAU Software, Inc., a global provider of high volume, secure, mobile eCommerce solutions to enterprises. Prior to co-founding TANTAU, Sims served as COO of SCC Communications, a telecommunications support service company. He has also held several management positions at Tandem Computers - a developer of fault tolerant computer systems, and various financial and general management positions at Burroughs Corp. - a manufacturer of computer and related equipment.

"Sybase 365 has a unique opportunity to expand its share of the operator services and mobile commerce services markets, particularly in the rapidly growing areas of mobile banking, mobile payments and IPX connectivity," states Sims. "It will be exciting and gratifying to shepherd Sybase 365 growth in such a vibrant market."

Cutting speed--freedom of choice.(shop talk)

As a machinist working for ABC or XYZ Company, you don't have a lot of variables that you personally select in your day-to-day duties. You don't select which machine tools to purchase, you don't pick which part to machine, and you generally don't choose the tools in the tool crib or the coolant in your machine.

There are three items that you can select every day for each part on the machine: the speed, the feedrate, and the depth of cut. These variables all affect tool life, so all are important.

Last month we discussed using the surface footage value in our part programs instead of using an rpm value. Using the 3.82 constant in the program reminds people to think in terms of sfpm rather than rpm when selecting cutting speeds.

In training classes I always compare machining speeds with driving speeds. You wouldn't look at the tachometer to see how fast you're driving--the speed of the engine is not a good indicator of the car's speed. The machine's rpm is not a good indicator of the cutting speed either.

The spindle speed is one of the factors that machinists select, so sometimes they change the spindle speeds (in rpm), guessing until they find one that works. Many older machinists have a good feel for the best rpm in a given situation. This understanding is typically based on years of experience. However, as I point out to students, we don't want to take 20 years to learn this stuff.

So, where can we find sfpm values to use in our programs? There are certain rules-of-thumb that should work with most applications.

Last month we discussed drilling and tapping. With general steel types (1045 plain steel) using HSS tooling, I start with 100sfpm for both a spot drill and a twist drill. When tapping, the rule of thumb is to use one-third of the drilling sfpm value.

When using 316 stainless steel some people use an sfpm of 55 when using HSS drills. The one-third adjustment for tapping would tell you to select 18sfpm for tapping.

With carbide tooling, a good rule-of-thumb is 500sfpm for standard turning speeds. This is like driving at 60mph, not fast but safe. I use this value as a general gauge for sfpm values. For tougher material (4140 pre-heat-treated steel) I would slow the speed to 350sfpm to 400sfpm.

When milling, we use lower cutting speeds. Multiple flute cutters result in an interrupted cut and normally require slower speeds.

Selecting the correct cutting speed is a judgment call. Some machinists are always conservative. This can be detrimental to the tool properly cutting. Sometimes you just have to run the tool as fast as the manufacturer recommends to get the tool to work correctly.

On the other hand, some people are very optimistic. They tend to start with the highest sfpm values with little regard for long-term tool life. You can't experiment with sfpm if you damage the tool on the first test.

People working in the machine tool industry often favor this optimistic method. They are on the "cutting edge" of technology, working with the newest and fastest machines. Just remind yourself that even with new machine tools and fast cycle time estimates, we're still talking about carbide against metal.

Whether we wish to be conservative or optimistic, we need to utilize a cutting speed that efficiently makes parts without changing tools all day.

We all have the same challenge, finding the sfpm that works in each unique situation. Once you find the sfpm that works, record your result. This hard-won knowledge is priceless. Once you have it you can then make the correct judgment between the conservative and the optimistic.

LOGICAL NET RELEASES GREEN DOOR.(BUSINESS)

Byline: DANIELLE T. FURFARO Business writer

Colonie Internet service provider Logical Net Corp. has released Green Door, an e-commerce software that diversifies the company's product offerings.

Green Door, which was developed in conjunction with Ezway Solutions Inc., a Schenectady-based software developer, has three separate modules that provide the ability to manage a catalog or inventory, utilize a shopping cart for product selection and process credit-card transactions.

The services range in price from $20 to $40 a month, company marketing specialist Bill Gathen said.

``Unlike some companies, we don't limit the amount of items that customers can have in their catalog or charge them for each item,'' Gathen said. ``They also don't have to call us to make changes. They can do it all themselves.''

Gathen would not say whether Logical Net and Ezway share equal ownership of Green Door.

In order to handle the encryption services needed to process credit-card transactions safely, Logical Net has contracted the services of Go2Pay Inc., a North Greenbush-based e-commerce payment-processing firm spun off IFS International Holdings Inc., a banking software developer.

The Go2Pay services will be used by both Green Door customers and Logical Net's ISP customers; the latter number 30,000 in New York, Massachusetts and Vermont.

So far, Gathen said, the most prominent user of Green Door is MusicWeb.com, a Latham-based online music seller.

Officials at MusicWeb could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Tribune Presents Business Update at Media Conferences.

Executives Outline Strategies for 2006

CHICAGO, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Tribune Company executives today updated business progress and outlined company strategies for 2006 at the annual UBS and Credit Suisse First Boston Media Week conferences in New York City.

"Tribune's local businesses continue to be leaders in their communities, valued by consumers and advertisers alike," said Dennis FitzSimons, chairman, president and chief executive officer. "We are local media, and provide crucial news and information for the markets we serve. This is especially true in times of crisis, such as when the hurricanes hit New Orleans and South Florida this fall."

Additionally, FitzSimons said, "Our newspapers and broadcast stations continue to generate significant cash flow, and that enables both our important journalistic mission and our ability to create value for shareholders."

He highlighted the company's expense reduction initiatives and said Tribune was redeploying resources and investing in areas that will contribute to future growth, like further expansion on the Internet.

Scott Smith, Tribune Publishing president, cited growing responsive readership and subscriber retention as top priorities for 2006. He also said the newspaper group is "committed to leading the aggressive changes required to best serve our customers and communities, and to deliver better financial results."

John Reardon, Tribune Broadcasting president, said the company's 26 television stations aim to maximize cash flow by emphasizing innovation, economies of scale and tight cost controls. He pointed to several bright spots for the group, including solid ratings for several shows on the WB and Fox networks, strong local news franchises and growth at Superstation WGN.

"Clearly, our goal is to improve performance in 2006," Reardon said. "With some help from our local markets, we're optimistic we can achieve that."

Don Grenesko, Tribune chief financial officer, said actions taken to reduce the company's cost structure will result in special charges in the fourth quarter. Staff reductions totaling 900 positions, mostly in publishing, will generate severance charges of $40 to $45 million. In addition, the closing of a Los Angeles Times production facility will result in a non-cash charge of $50 to $60 million. Grenesko said annual expense savings of $55 to $60 million beginning in 2006 will provide a nine-month payback of the cash expenses associated with the restructuring.

Tribune's capital expenditures in 2006 will be about $220 million, unchanged from 2005, Grenesko added. Debt should also be flat, he said, and interest expense will increase by approximately $40 million. The company's effective tax rate will be 39.25 percent.

TRIBUNE is one of the country's top media companies, operating businesses in publishing and broadcasting. It reaches more than 80 percent of U.S. households and is the only media organization with newspapers, television stations and websites in the nation's top three markets. In publishing, Tribune operates 11 leading daily newspapers including the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and Newsday, plus a wide range of targeted publications such as Spanish-language Hoy. The company's broadcasting group operates 26 television stations, Superstation WGN on national cable, Chicago's WGN-AM and the Chicago Cubs baseball team. Popular news and information websites complement Tribune's print and broadcast properties and extend the company's nationwide audience.

Women encouraged to export.(Australia Department of Industry, Tourism & Resources)(Brief Article)

Oct 04, 2004 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX)

Austrade expects businesswomen to help it achieve a doubling of Australian exporters between 2001 and 2007. Tim Harcourt, the chief economist at Austrade, says the aim is to have 50,000 Australian businesses exporting by 2007. He notes figures from the Australian Department of Industry, Tourism & Resources, showing that about a third of all small business operators are women. Yet Harcourt says women are under-represented in the export sector. He feels that many are ready to sell to overseas market, given the global acceptance of doing business on the internet.
